What is thrombocytopenia?
Thrombocytopenia occurs when your blood platelet count is low. Platelets can also be called thrombocytes. This type of blood cell forms blood clots when it clumps together. It is used to stop bleeding from a cut or wound. A blood clot can also be called a thrombus.
Bone marrow, the soft and spongy bone tissue that is
found within bones, is responsible for making all blood cells, including
platelets. People with
thrombocytopenia have fewer platelets than normal to form blood clots. You may
experience excessive bleeding from a cut or injury. It can be difficult to stop
the bleeding.
Low
platelet count
Normal platelet counts range from 150,000 to
400,000. A count lower
than 150,000 is considered thrombocytopenia and may affect your ability to donate
platelets, among other things.
A low
platelet count of less than 10,000 is considered severe hemoglobinemia. It can lead to dangerous internal bleeding if
your platelet count drops below 10,000.
Thrombocytopenia may be an inherited condition or
can be caused by medication or other medical conditions. One or more of these main processes can reduce
the platelet count in your bloodstream:
- Production of platelets has fallen.
- Platelets are being destroyed more frequently.
- Increased accumulation of platelets within the spleen
What Are the Signs and Symptoms of a Low Platelet Count?
People with thrombocytopenia don't experience any
symptoms that are directly related to low platelets. However, they may
experience symptoms that are related to the underlying cause.
Extra bleeding may occur in severe thrombocytopenia,
which is a condition where the platelet count falls below 10,000 to 20,000. If
platelet counts are very low, spontaneous bleeding can also occur.
The following are signs and symptoms of bleeding due to
thrombocytopenia:
- Bleeding or bleeding easily
- Pinpoint hemorrhages (petechiae or bruising) can occur in the skin or linings of the mouth.
- Nosebleeds
- Bleeding gums
- Heavy menstrual periods
- There may be blood in your stool or urine
Other symptoms and signs that can be seen in patients
with thrombocytopenia include.
