  Mucor mycosis, or black fungus, among those infected with or recovered from Covid-19 in hospitals across India, has added to the medical community's woes. Mucor mycosis is a serious but rare fungal infection caused by a group of moulds called 'Mucoromycetes'. Mucoromycetes live throughout the environment and is ubiquitous in nature. It can affect areas from where it can be inhaled—through the nose/ sinus/ lungs. If it enters from a wound or skin, then it can cause local infection, but if it enters from the sinus, it can affect the eyes and the brain.   A second epidemic broke out earlier this year. It was the sound of the epidemic of Black fungus or Mucormycosis. This fungal infection affected thousands of Covid-19 patients in India. This infection can lead to death at more than half the rate if left untreated. The Indian government increased surveillance as the number of cases began to rise. Late June saw 40,845 cases of mucormycosis. Most affected the sinuses, brain , and nasal passages. 85.5 percent of patients were in recovery from Covid-19, and over 3,000 people had died. To stop the spread of Covid-19, strict surveillance was required. The Indian Council of Medical Research issued guidelines to help in the early detection of the disease. This is a list that you should keep in mind when preventing mucormycosis.
