This infection can lead to death at more than half the rate if left untreated. The Indian government increased surveillance as the number of cases began to rise. Late June saw 40,845 cases of mucormycosis. Most affected the sinuses, brain , and nasal passages. 85.5 percent of patients were in recovery from Covid-19, and over 3,000 people had died. To stop the spread of Covid-19, strict surveillance was required. The Indian Council of Medical Research issued guidelines to help in the early detection of the disease.
