What is thrombocytopenia?
Thrombocytopenia occurs when your blood platelet count is low. Platelets can also be called thrombocytes. This type of blood cell forms blood clots when it clumps together. It is used to stop bleeding from a cut or wound. A blood clot can also be called a thrombus. Bone marrow, the soft and spongy bone tissue that is found within bones, is responsible for making all blood cells, including platelets. People with thrombocytopenia have fewer platelets than normal to form blood clots. You may experience excessive bleeding from a cut or injury. It can be difficult to stop the bleeding.
